Driving in the Czech Republic

A neutral, informational overview of the Czech road network and what travellers should know before driving in Czechia.

Overview

Czechia operates a well-developed network of motorways, regional roads and urban routes connecting the country with its neighbours. Visiting drivers should familiarise themselves with general traffic rules and signage before their journey.

General rules

  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road.
  • Headlights are typically required at all times.
  • Standard speed limits apply on motorways, rural roads and inside built-up areas.
  • Children and passengers must use appropriate restraints as defined by law.

Signage

Czech road signs follow European conventions. Motorway sections subject to the electronic vignette are marked with dedicated signage at the start and end of each chargeable segment.

Planning your route

Before travelling, drivers can review official maps published by the Czech transport authorities to identify which motorway sections require electronic road access.
